Need for Speed™ Unbound
analyzed 2026-08-22 · sample of 441 English reviews across the whole review history
Players consistently praise the game’s visuals, with graphics and art style drawing strongly positive reactions; one calls the "graffiti-inspired graphics" a unique aesthetic, and another says the "Artistic vision here is just incredible." Customization is also a bright spot, with players noting "Lots of customization for each car I had." Multiplayer is frequently framed as the game’s best mode, with one player writing that "Online is where this game really shines and what it is meant for." The negative side is broad and recurring. Controls, story, and AI behavior all skew heavily negative, with complaints about "Nasty rubber banding of cops and racers" and a story that "feels like it should be satire." Performance and stability are near-universal pain points, including "DirectX error ruined my game" and a game that "will consistently and suddenly just tank" after about an hour. Writing, characters, and voice acting are also criticized, with one player saying the dialogue makes "the dialogue in Saints Row 2022 look competent." Price value, progression, and balance draw frequent complaints, and players mention grind as a recurring theme.

Gameplay is great for singleplayer.

Beside of that it is a funny arcade racer.

Is Fun and Brain Dead Racing.

controls
16 positive · 53 negative · 2 mixed · 3 neutral
-
- Custom controls not allowed - made me switch to automatic because I didn't want to use bumpers to shift
-
My first big disappointment are the driving physics. They pretty much remain unchanged throughout the last few parts and I do not consider this a good thing.
-
No matter which car you choose, however, they're all afflicted with a severe case of understeer.

-
story
22 positive · 49 negative · 2 mixed · 1 neutral
-
The story is weak, kind of as always.
-
As is now customary in Need for Speed games, Unbound features a rather forgettable story about getting back at a former friend who stole your ride.
-
No, the whole story is you get betrayed and all your cars stolen, then the antagonist sends a spy to help you get better so you can beat her.
-
-
ai behavior
7 positive · 41 negative · 4 mixed · 0 neutral
-
- Nasty rubber banding of cops and racers - easily the most annoying part of the game
-
THE COPS AND PURSUITS ARE ACTUAL DOG BOOTY CHEEK!
-
The only downside is that the AI doesn't always play fair.

The first thing that jumps out when starting Need for Speed Unbound is its vibrant art style.

the ost: i dont know if i would exactly call it BAD but it isnt great.
-
Everything else like the music... very meh.
-
Every cringe worthy dialogue exchange, the music selection (just mute it), the complete lack of the tense motion effects at high speeds (The original NFS Underground did this in 2003!

customization

+ Lots of customization for each car I had
-
I like a lot, i like the customization... ALOT
-
car customization - this game has some of the best car customization in any nfs game i have ever played (maybe behind nfsmw 2005 but that doesn't count).

Online is where this game really shines and what it is meant for.

Running from Heat 5 with friends was fun and in this game it'd be even better.

progression
6 positive · 23 negative · 1 mixed · 3 neutral
-
You need to do 90 races of B tier with multiple brands to unlock other brands of the cars in multiplayer.
-
The fact the unlockable cars just vanish forever if you don't get first place is pretty frustrating.
-
Early game money is low, but I believe its a good thing, but after you beat the game you still get a pretty low amount of earnings on races making getting new cars and having fun with that part of the game pretty annoying post game.

content amount
10 positive · 17 negative · 1 mixed · 1 neutral
-
The tracks repeats A LOT. Not many variations.
-
Overall, this game is far more enjoyable on the short term then most other Ghost Games made NFS, but with the limited amount of tracks and events within this game, that fun will run out quick.
-
Very superficial, same NFS world view with cars from '71 that dominate in s+ 400+ score but now there is no content... Online has about 20-30 races, some of which are the reverse of others and you have to keep doing these over, and over, and over again.

difficulty
11 positive · 18 negative · 0 mixed · 0 neutral
-
Could use some AI fixes and the cops are still as much of a pushover like in heat, but easier to outrun.
-
And the constant stunt jumps that sling you right into a bridge or wall combined with the pedestrian traffic spawns and insanely hard police on the relaxed difficulty make this game unplayable.

while i do recommend Unbound, the fact that ALL cars besides yours is rated for S+. being in first going 180 or more then all of a sudden a person with a subpar car blasts past you like you are standing still.
-
There's so much wrong with this game from the sense of speed being stupidly slow to the AI being completely overpowered no matter how easy you set the difficulty to, this game is just horrible.
-
The rating system is a lie and has no place in a need for speed game.
-
-
stability
1 positive · 24 negative · 0 mixed · 0 neutral
-
DirectX error ruined my game.
-
Crashes on my system with a directx error.

If the Origin app was still here then i would not have to suffer through countless hours of checking reddit threads and videos on how to fix a infinite loading screen or literally my own friends not being put into my own lockdown game in my own party.

writing

The dialogue is weak, as always.

The sound track, the NPC dialogue, the police, the way your character talks just all suck the rest of any remaining enjoyment out of the game.

Horrible story line, makes the dialogue in Saints Row 2022 look competent.

physics
6 positive · 14 negative · 1 mixed · 0 neutral
-
the physics: the physics are a bit janky from time to time and i think a bit of a downgrade from heats.
-
Cons: Driving physics don't make sense if you've played anything more realistic.
-
You'll just be cruising down a straight doing minor adjustments to avoid traffic and you'll hit invisible speed bumps which lifts the car juuuuuuuuust enough for the wheels to lose contact with the pavement causing the car to freak out when it makes contact again.

characters

The characters are mostly weak, especially the protagonist is just.

the mission where you go pick him up and drive him around is SO bad.

But EA would rather update a BATTLE PASS IN A MULTIPLAYER GAME NO ONE LIKES.
-
, welp you have to burn i think around 15 usd just to get a free content of the premium speed pass, not worth it at all imo for my car colletor urges
-
The fact that the first thing they splash before you even start is buy this or this and this like you have to decline every DLC before you can even start.

The car sounds are alright, I have heard better but also worse, I do like that you can tune your exhaust sound to your liking which I think you could already do in the previous titles but it is a cool feature nonetheless.

Audio: 7/10

Pros: Gameplay is good, Graphics are great even at the low settings, Car customization are great, 140+ Cars to drive (Still no toyota tho:(), Car engine sounds are eargasm same as nfs heat, and Car handling is depends how you played, play this with you friends for a greater racing experience

Beside from that, how tf you can make a race game with a limited numbers or restart PER SESSION even in single player mode and even in easy difficulty?
-
- In Single player, the day thing is cool but I don't like having only one shot at an event, plus the limited restart thing is lame.

2) certain features are just plain hidden, exhaust tuning is present but shoved in the vanity menu but only accessible by pressing a button.
-
Radio in this game is silly and annoying, but there is no volume control for that, as its seen as normal dialogues which as i found out, are useful to actually hear if its a car mission, or just a stupid side race.
-
And that's cool but without a list or directory it's hard to find your favorite one.

pacing
1 positive · 5 negative · 1 mixed · 0 neutral
-
However after you get to a certain point in the story it gets really repetitive and boring.
-
I was enjoying it at start but got way too bored of it near the end of the story.
-
Each qualifier you are doing the same races against the same opponents and after almost every race theres a tedious cop chase which wouldnt be bad, but the cop chases are so BORING in this game.

updates

There is no update since the release one month ago.

Lately i see more and more additional purchase DLC's showing up on steam for this game that grant you access to additional 1 car and some tuning functions, and with them, random update of 30GB for this game even if you did not purchase anything.

all these new updates and none of them are to fix the online access for a lot of players

atmosphere

The vibe is street based. Rap music and ethnic characters abound. Those looking for a for Rock or Heavy Metal themed game will thumb this down.
-
That game is a vibe.
-
The vibe is amazing: the graffiti-inspired cartoon effects layered on a realistic city give it a bold identity, almost like a Dishonored-style contrast between gritty realism and stylized art.

mods
3 positive · 2 negative · 0 mixed · 0 neutral
-
Customization is awesome and community wraps are the best thing to happen in modern nfs so I am glad they are continuing it.
-
Customization, as i initially mentioned too, is genuinely extreme, many cars you can remove bumpers, bodykits for pretty much every car, and if you get into modding, you can make even more unique customization from the driving effects, to even adding some police customization to your actual car.
-
Shame that the previous NFS isn't as good as well but you nab yourself some community mods with NFS:heat to improve the game that would give you a better gameplay expierence then Unbound.

voice acting
0 positive · 4 negative · 0 mixed · 1 neutral

The guy I have chosen for my character has an absolutely terrible voice actor that just does not fit at all into this game and its artstyle.

Dialogue/voice acting can be a little cringey sometimes, but the game is fun and definitely worth playing.

How this report was made
- Population
- all Steam reviews of the game (every language, purchase type, and verdict), walked newest-first per window; only English-language reviews are analyzed
- Sample
- 441 English reviews, time-proportional draw over 45 windows (newest-first within each), taken from an all-language walk and kept English-only — where English is a minority the sample runs smaller than the draw, and every margin of error is computed at 441
- Aspect yield
- 288 of 441 analyzed reviews carry at least one aspect (65.3%); every share on this page divides by all 441
- Interval regime
