Max Payne 3
analyzed 2026-08-08 · sample of 448 English reviews across the whole review history
Players consistently praise the core shooting and physics, with one calling it a "Great Third Person shooter" and another noting "shooting and physics feels great". The story and writing also draw strong approval, particularly the voice acting: "James MCcaffrey is great as Max" and "the writing and voice acting are suberb". The soundtrack is another bright spot, described as adding "the right atmosphere". The most frequent complaints center on platform access and pacing. Reviewers repeatedly cite the Rockstar Social Club requirement, with one writing "you have to sign up to stupid ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ rockstar social club". Pacing is called "frustrating and feels way off", and stability issues are universally negative, including "The game would frequently crash on start up". Controls split opinion, with some finding them "re pesados" while others report the game "ran splendidly on Steam Deck". Opinion divides on level design, atmosphere, and difficulty. Some praise the "visual style with all the camera effects" while others say it "Lacks the noir atmosphere". The campaign length draws mixed takes, from "relatively short (7-10 hours)" to "goes on for longer than it should". Multiplayer is described as empty, with "nobody plays the multiplayer anymore".

Amazing story and great gameplay!
-
I loved gameplay, story is good.
-
The story is the typical Rockstar/Max Payne "from bad to worse, to why-the-♥♥♥♥-is-this-happening-to-the-poor-guy" and escalates quickly.

Las armas son las mismas de siempre, aunque se sienten todas bien distintas y por lo tanto sirven en distintos momentos todas.
-
it's shooting and physics feels great especially when hitting a shoot-dive combo and it also comes along with a ranking system for how fast you clear things out.
-
Best shooting mechanics ever, not so great story but the environments are varied and the story is okay enough to keep you interested but not exceptional.

Rockstar DRM is the best ♥♥♥♥ in the world /s

I will point out however that there are some major problems with the game's DRM system (Rockstar Social Club).

- too much cutscene
-
SlOw
-
There are too many of them. Devs wanted to hide loading screens of level parts by cutscenes, but it slows down fast-paced action gameplay. Sometimes, it looks like you are watching a movie instead of playing a video game.

+ sountrack
-
First two are masterpieces and this is briliant end of a trilogy, the gameplay is pretty sick, soundtrack is awesome and story is pretty good.
-
A good soundtrack adds the right atmosphere to all the mentioned things, but there is one problem – cutscenes.

Los controles son re pesados y el gameplay en mas de un momento se vuelve frustrante, por culpa de ellos.

- Linearity.
-
- Environment & cover system is lacking
-
A bit more linear than Remedy's two Max Payne games, causing some frustration with locking doors behind me when collectible hunting, but it more than makes up for that with the most sublime gunplay of any third-person-shooter to this very day.

stability

-
I was very excited to play this game, until the first time I opened it and it froze on an 'Initializing' screen.
-
The game would frequently crash on start up, and this lead to doing some major research.
-
Also, the game tend to crash a lot, especially if you don't give it administrator right for some reason.

game length

The campaign is relatively short (7-10 hours), but you can try to complete all challenges or replay it on a harder difficulty.
-
Runs out of tricks after a few hours, then goes on for longer than it should.
-
Great game, catch it on sale def, only 10 hours of story alone, though if you want there are quite a few achievements and collectibles to grind, and multiplayer, which i haven't tested if it works.

Looks great, solid performance, few bugs, and excellent keyboard/mouse controls complementing its excellent shooting mechanics.

This game hasn't aged a day, ran perfectly 120+ FPS right out the box on my 7800 XT.

oh and this games gonna be kicking your ass every now and then as getting shot in the wrong spot or with the wrong weapons is insta death but that just adds into the pressure and the adrenaline you feel when going for a risky move.
-
Played on hard and it kicked my ass a lot of times, a lot more difficult then previous parts.
-
Do you like to brag about how you can beat games on Insane Manly Man difficulty?

atmosphere
7 positive · 8 negative · 0 mixed · 0 neutral
-
Secondly, the atmosphere and setting are wildly different from the other two games, as is Max himself.
-
Lacks the noir atmosphere and philosophical depth of earlier entries, which some fans might miss
-
The game should have stayed completely in the cold and dark New York setup, not sure if the sunny Brazil hits the real feeling of the Max Payne vibe.

price value

100 percent buy when you can, its worth the 10 or 15 bucks that it is in your country.
-
I haven't entirely explored the multiplayer and challenge aspects of the game yet but the story mode is enough to make this game worth the buy,
-
Budget: Worth it.

writing

-
Max Payne 3 rips, the writing and voice acting are suberb which apart from the very basic yet addicting game mechanics is the backbone of the game.
-
Another thing that makes this game so intresting is the diaglouge that Max gives about the scenario, which usually is a funny analogy or a pitty remark.
-
-James MCcaffrey is great as Max and some of the one-liners are really entertaining
-
-
replayability
8 positive · 4 negative · 0 mixed · 0 neutral
-
High replayability through the arcade section where you can do the storymode levels but with different challenges, and if you have friends you can play online multiplayer too which seems fleshed out but I'm not a multiplayer guy.
-
The campaign is relatively short (7-10 hours), but you can try to complete all challenges or replay it on a harder difficulty.
-
After finishing it twice I must say this game is worth a third finish.

bugs

-
Experienced an immersion breaking bug during a cutscene that took me out of it and soured the climax of the story.
-
Cut-scenes are very buggy, the audio crackles and gives out and sometimes crashes the game.
-
Less fluid, more bugs, more glitches, worse AI, bulky.

Weapons have nice sounds. They don't sound like toys but nearly like real-life weapons. They have detailed animations as well.

- Destruction, phisics and debris everywhere!

The game uses the Euphoria Engine for ragdolls, so NPC behave very realistically when they get hit. Also, bullet time is well made.

-
I do recommend this game, but I dont like it because rockstar made it.
-
Its sad finishing this game and think that it would take R* 10+ years to release another game from this saga, if they dont kill it before that. I dont want to even think about a remaster like they did with GTA San Andreas and Vice City.

balance

Fun but unbalanced multiplayer (invite system run by the archaic Rockstar Social Club) can be an absolute blast or make you want to punch someone in the face.
-
-There's an endless wave of enemies to artificially make the game difficult not to mention an unfairness element
-
There WILL be A TON of enemies in the later chapters that TANK HEADSHOTS like its the Diamond Casino Heist NPC's like BRUH rockstar, I should NOT have to shoot the UFE soldiers ten thousand times in the body.

art style
3 positive · 1 negative · 1 mixed · 0 neutral
-
Interesting visual presentation with noir elements, accentuated by excellent narration and voice-acting by the late James McAffrey.
-
It wasn’t just the introduction of the now-iconic Bullet Time mechanic; it was the way the story was so masterfully told and visually illustrated through its gritty comic-book style.
-
The story is engaging enough to push the action forward and the visual style with all the camera effects and whatnot is something I've never seen before or since this game's release.

How this report was made
- Population
- all Steam reviews of the game (every language, purchase type, and verdict), walked newest-first per window; only English-language reviews are analyzed
- Sample
- 448 English reviews, time-proportional draw over 171 windows (newest-first within each), taken from an all-language walk and kept English-only — where English is a minority the sample runs smaller than the draw, and every margin of error is computed at 448
- Aspect yield
- 259 of 448 analyzed reviews carry at least one aspect (57.8%); every share on this page divides by all 448
- Interval regime
- calm: standard margins of error for a share of a sample (Wilson interval), no widening needed
- Fetch paths
- 171 time windows fetched directly (windowed)
- Language mix
- 1,000 fetched: english 451 · russian 133 · turkish 113 · 23 more
- Steam-marked windows
- none flagged by Steam (Valve's off-topic flagging began March 2019)
- Marked share
- 0.0% of sample inside marked windows, under the 2% floor
- Narrative
- passed the grounding gate first try
- Evidence floor
- aspects and emergent themes appear only with 5+ supporting reviews; smaller counts sit at the classifier's false-positive floor
- Instrument readings
- measured once on the study corpus for this model and prompt: frozen calibration, not properties of this run
- · aspect tagging vs. human labels
- 0.766 [0.713–0.811] (F1 against a human-labeled test set; 1.0 is best)
- · quotes filed under the wrong aspect
- 11.6% [6.6–19.6] of quotes, measured by hand on a sample; lower is better
- · independent model vs. production labels
- 0.791 [0.772–0.810] (F1 of the production labeler against an independent judge model)
- Versions
- deepseek-v4-flash · prompt classify-v1 · ontology v2
