Sid Meier’s Civilization® VI
analyzed 2026-10-05 · sample of 640 English reviews across the whole review history
Across 640 sampled reviews, the aspects players raise most are gameplay and addictiveness. The pull is real: "you get pulled in where I spend entire days playing a single game. Just one more turn", and one player "Was surprised I've been playing for 12 hours already". Replayability and build variety draw similar notes, with players describing a "totally new player experience with each new play-through" and enough variety to "tailor your play style as you desire". Criticism clusters around the AI, balance, and stability. Of the 32 reviews mentioning AI behavior, 28 are negative, and balance draws 19 negative mentions against 8 positive. Stability is lopsided too, with 18 negative mentions against 1 positive, including reports that "it constantly crashes on macOS" and that the game gets "Constantly getting stuck between turns". The user interface and pacing also draw mostly negative mentions, as does developer conduct. Opinion splits on the learning curve, price value, and the DLC, where negative mentions outnumber positive ones. Multiplayer, graphics, difficulty, and music lean positive. Players also bring up platform access, mods, and map generation, though those themes carry no figures here.

Awesome game, really fun min-maxing

With the combination of partial realism and fun strategy it can get interesting.

Civilization VI is great but you get pulled in where I spend entire days playing a single game. Just one more turn.

Civ6 is a hell of a drug.

As of writing this, this is my 4th most played game on steam, and I have to say, it is a good game, but I would not pay full price for the outrageous amounts of DLC for this game.
-
Well, I bought this when I was on sale, and stupidly got the more expensive version with the DLC.
-
dlc too much money :(

learning curve
9 positive · 14 negative · 8 mixed · 9 neutral
-
Hard to learn solo ;/ I needed to watch like 6 guides and gameplays to get what to do in this game lol But after learning some , u will enjoy it very much <3 <3
-
The mechanics of the game are a bit hard to grasp by just reading the manual and I rather recommend playing the game to learn the mechanics.
-
The Tutorial, which is awful at explaining how to play the game takes long enough to take you out of the refund window.
-
-
price value
14 positive · 16 negative · 6 mixed · 2 neutral
-
Other than the fact that this makes the buy in a bit more expensive in order to have the best time you can with the game I can still highly recommend this game to anyone that is either a fan of the series or is looking to get into strategy games for the first time.

-
Not worth the full price.

ai behavior
3 positive · 28 negative · 1 mixed · 0 neutral
-
btw u can set the difficulty to deity and just play to the end with almost no troops and the npcs just wont attack you.
-
AI has its issues at times, but all-in-all, I thoroughly enjoy this game, and am excited to see what will be kept from this title in the next iteration.
-
AI in Civ6 does not build any military units so it just too easy to take the AI cities.

balance

What I hated when I played this a few years ago was the way they limited expansion by having a ramp-up cost for settlers and workers (or whatever they are called instead).
-
they clearly tried to buff npc difficulty by just placing them in close proximity zzzzzzzzzz.
-
The map generation will without a doubt give you Mega Aids and you will hit restart 10000000000000 times before you get something you like just to play 20 turns to get railed by 4 bandit camps all at once before you can even get ONE unit built.

If you like a game that is fun, challenging, simple to get started, and difficult to master then this might be the game for you.

its cool, fun cause it can be hard

It's customizeable to maximize the challenge level for advanced players and present a totally new player experience with each new play-through.

updates

Good upgrades to the civ games. Adding global events and climate change. Game is the same but, also upgraded from previous games.
-
As time passed the game got even better!
-
Luckily most of these frustrations could probably be easily fixed with some small updates and patches that refine the features and if these were my only complaints then I probably would have given the game an overall favorable rating.

Constantly getting stuck between turns.
-
Play by cloud desperately needs more attention (Please fix the webhook function to work with discord!) but otherwise definitely worth it.
-
Fog of war flickers so terribly that I can't even look at the screen any more.

pacing
1 positive · 14 negative · 2 mixed · 0 neutral

While playing there are large stretchs of time where I am just clicking the next turn button and it feels, well, bad.
-
Good entry in the series, feels a little slower and more focused on city building.
-
The gameplay is very slow and not very engaing, don't buy unless you have a lot of free time to complete a single campaign.

Ok strike one, it's published by 2K games.

I contacted Aspyr support and they did nothing to resolve - couldn't even be bothered to put up an old, working build to Steam for download.

I don't trust this publisher and neither should you.

The GUI is pretty bad.
-
Multiplayer in Civ 6 is also very wonky and laggy at times and has a counter intuitive UI.
-
I selected the option that I was new to Civ 6 but the game still doesn't tell you how to do ♥♥♥♥ and the UI must have been designed by a blind alien.

i spent an entire day trying to get my space and no matter the map type, the map size, the amount of players, nor the amount of city states. nothing would give me the space.
-
The map generation will without a doubt give you Mega Aids and you will hit restart 10000000000000 times before you get something you like just to play 20 turns to get railed by 4 bandit camps all at once before you can even get ONE unit built.

build variety
11 positive · 0 negative · 0 mixed · 0 neutral
-
Moar bettarz than CIV5; hopefully CIV7 moves even farther toward each playthrough being a diverse experience, but still enough variety for me to put my thousand hours in.
-
Very complex game but fun to play; can tailor your play style as you desire, so long as you make considerable progress in doing so.
-
One of Civilizations strengths lies in its diverse array of nations, each with a unique leader and ability.

combat

It involves just enough strategy to continue to interest me, while the turn based nature allows you to go in and out concentration.
-
… highly replayable so much so ive had it over the years on a phone a playstation and as this review is on steam i personaly love the stratagy that can go into battles planing your civ and the ways your stratagy can differ depending on the victory you go for to find out more about why i love this …
-
War is more viable in this game than in any Civ game before, even better than in Beyond Earth.

I've had this for a while now but havn't played much due to lack of workshop, but now its here!! I can say from what i have played that the base seems better than civ v, but i just couldnt live without some mods, so i played that one more.

The technology tree, while shorter than its predecessor, adds a layer of simplicity to upgrades, enabling players to complete cage matches in record time.

You also get to keep your units after every age. Upgrade them as you go. No Cap on Cities.
-
… and as this review is on steam i personaly love the stratagy that can go into battles planing your civ and the ways your stratagy can differ depending on the victory you go for to find out more about why i love this game you should play it yourself and if you do i hope this review helps …

I also like how it picks up the pace with music usually due to a pending attack or building up of suspense.

player choice
5 positive · 4 negative · 0 mixed · 0 neutral
-
The map pins you can place help you map out the best bonuses and there's almost always a sacrifice to be made somewhere, which makes the choices really feel more potent and relevant to the longer term plan you have for your civilization.
-
game brings a whole different range of options and decision that need to be made, as well as a enormous range of different civics, resources and choices.
-
There's no "right" way, just positives and negatives with each decision.
-
-
relaxation
6 positive · 1 negative · 0 mixed · 0 neutral
-
May seem odd since it's a strategy game, but just sitting there building a civilization has become soothing to me.
-
It is a peaceful and non-stressing experience, packed with change and challenges.
-
A pretty chill civilization management game.
-
-
realism
2 positive · 2 negative · 0 mixed · 1 neutral
-
With the combination of partial realism and fun strategy it can get interesting.
-
City state diplomacy system also feels much more realistic and fun.
-
Either I'm brain damaged or it feels like some mechanics were made with politics in mind, like how nuclear energy has half as much carbon emissions as oil power plants.

How this report was made
- Population
- all Steam reviews of the game (every language, purchase type, and verdict), walked newest-first per window; only English-language reviews are analyzed
- Sample
- 640 English reviews, time-proportional draw over 121 windows (newest-first within each), taken from an all-language walk and kept English-only — where English is a minority the sample runs smaller than the draw, and every margin of error is computed at 640
- Aspect yield
- 337 of 640 analyzed reviews carry at least one aspect (52.7%); every share on this page divides by all 640
- Interval regime
- calm: standard margins of error for a share of a sample (Wilson interval), no widening needed
- Fetch paths
- 121 time windows fetched directly (windowed)
- Language mix
- 1,000 fetched: english 645 · schinese 92 · german 43 · 20 more
- Steam-marked windows
- none flagged by Steam (Valve's off-topic flagging began March 2019)
- Marked share
- 0.0% of sample inside marked windows, under the 2% floor
- Narrative
- passed the grounding gate first try
- Evidence floor
- aspects and emergent themes appear only with 5+ supporting reviews; smaller counts sit at the classifier's false-positive floor
- Instrument readings
- measured once on the study corpus for this model and prompt: frozen calibration, not properties of this run
- · aspect tagging vs. human labels
- 0.801 [0.752–0.844] (F1 against a human-labeled test set; 1.0 is best)
- · quotes filed under the wrong aspect
- 11.6% [6.6–19.6] of quotes, measured by hand on a sample; lower is better — measured on the prior model (2026-08-05); re-measurement pending
- · independent model vs. production labels
- 0.791 [0.772–0.810] (F1 of the production labeler against an independent judge model) — measured on the prior model (2026-07-25); re-measurement pending
