Shadowrun: Dragonfall - Director's Cut
analyzed 2026-10-20 · sample of 797 English reviews across the whole review history
Part of this narrative was removed: sentences that failed the grounding check against this report's stored data are not shown. What remains passed.
Players consistently single out the story and characters: the story is mentioned in 45.2% of sampled reviews, overwhelmingly positively, and characters in 24.3%, with 179 positive against 6 negative. One reviewer calls it "A lot of complex storytelling packed into this game", another says "the entire team was my close family". The world and atmosphere draw similar warmth, and the writing is praised for "Some genuinely funny moments, some actually heart-touching exchanges". Combat divides more than the narrative. Balance itself skews negative, and bugs, stability, UI, controls and voice acting are recurring complaints. Camera comes up as well. Opinion also splits on player choice, pacing and difficulty, while build variety, replayability, mods and price value are frequently praised. The game is often described as worth replaying, and one reviewer notes "I've replayed this more times than I can count".

Good game, good story.
-
A lot of complex storytelling packed into this game.
-
Perfect blend of what made the Genesis and SNES games so memorable, mixed with the excellent storytelling that old FASA used to bring when writing Shadowrun adventures.

combat

-
Great cyberpunk type world with good character customization and good strategic combat.
-
Combat is much improved over the original, but I found the story and characters to be pretty bland.
-
A deep enough story to be engaging, memorable cast, some degree of roleplaying and an interesting combat system to flow in-between dialogue.

This is the best game in the SR:R trilogy - excellent story, compelling characters, more player independence involving what order to do missions and who you can crew with.

Shadowrun: Dragonfall is better, interface-wise, character-wise, and story-wise.

A deep enough story to be engaging, memorable cast, some degree of roleplaying and an interesting combat system to flow in-between dialogue.

gameplay

Hong Kong is better in all things technical (gameplay, graphics, class mechanics), but this game is the best of the lot overall.
-
Good story with game play that is good enough to not be a detraction.
-
Amazing CRPG: good story plot, interesting characters, fun mechanics, and great replay value.

price value

(and worth every penny you spent on it.

9/10 Worth the purchase and replaying just for the vanilla campaign alone, toss in the community mods and campaigns and you have so much value it's crazy.
-
I was happy with the game delivered, the story was awesome I got my money's worth and them some.

quest design
63 positive · 11 negative · 3 mixed · 1 neutral
-
A lot of the things that made Shadowrun Returns unique are brushed away to make room for traditional Crpg elements, like a home base, save the world stakes, and a cast of party members that live with you and reveal their backstory to you as you level up and do their loyalty quests.
-
The main quest line is thrilling and its length is appropriate.
-
Characters you meet feel more real, and even the plethora of side missions add to the overall story and world.

If you look for a decent rpg with a decent gameplay (ie ui), then avoid this.

And movement actually sucks, for some reason quite often you can't see the full movement range (you see only 1 AP radius) and have to fidget the mouse around to get the full possible movement radius displayed.

bugs

The game can be buggy when going and out of Microsoft Windows to play music.

While I enjoy the gameplay, story, and character customization, there are simply too many glitches to warrent recommending this game.

This release is EXTREMELY buggy and freezes constantly, don't play this unless you are very patient.

-
Storywise, gameplay, rate of progression, this is a fantastic game and an amazing entry from the west into TBS-RPG's.
-
The RPG part is improved as well with NPC that can get sa (trong) perk chosen between two each level.

replayability

I've replayed this more times than I can count.

It's worth playing through more than once.

I've beaten the game about 8 times on mobile (you've got to be creative to find the de-listed apk) plus whatever i've done on desktop.

atmosphere
50 positive · 2 negative · 0 mixed · 0 neutral
-
Taking place in Germany, it deftly blends a sci-fi feel with heist, noir, and political themes to create a more fleshed out campaign setting.
-
Dragonfall had a great story, engaging characters and immersive story, thank you!
-
… positive and negative qualities of this game, but also deserving of a mention is the soundtrack - which continues to be fantastic at creating the right atmosphere - and the quality of the background art, which uses some kind of devil-magic to work perfectly with the 3D character models.

-
game length
17 positive · 16 negative · 2 mixed · 15 neutral

Over all the game leaves me with a satisfactory 24 hours of gameplay per run, 8.

Good length
-
Overall Fans of the original Shadowrun RPG on the SNES should find lots to like in Dragonfall as well as RPG fans in general and with a 10 hour main campaign along with many sidequests AND a level editor there is more than enough to keep you busy for a while.

music

Story, characters, setting, music, options, combat (turn based, X-COM style): everything is slick but deep.

The soundtrack is brilliant.

learning curve
16 positive · 20 negative · 7 mixed · 4 neutral
-
a) game does not teach you anything, read the damn help page (lol)
-
The only minus to this game is the lack of a proper tutorial.
-
The combat is fairly solid although some of the game mechanics were unclear for me, and the Matrix combat was buggy on rare occasion.
-
-
difficulty
15 positive · 18 negative · 4 mixed · 4 neutral
-
combat felt largely an illusion of difficulty / strategy instead of actual difficulty / strategy.
-
All in all, I really enjoyed my time with Dragonfall, even if Hard was maybe a little too frustrating for me.
-
Combat is pretty entertaining, though the AI is dumb sometimes and the game's still a bit too easy on Hard difficulty.
-
-
graphics
17 positive · 12 negative · 7 mixed · 5 neutral
-
Hong Kong is better in all things technical (gameplay, graphics, class mechanics), but this game is the best of the lot overall.
-
Visually the game is pleasing with a nice variety of environments to explore and plenty of little details strewn around, combat also looks satisfying with occasional dismemberment when you kill an enemy along with special effects when you use spells.
-
The grahpic presentation is really good, a fitting cell-shading / comic style approach, that depicts the entire shadowrun world nicely an with love and care for detail.

lore

As a PNP Shadow Run player the lore and story telling is 10/10.

Further, despite not needing to, I found myself digging through articles online to digest the rich history behind various events that you "run" through.

Love this game, I love the entire Shadowrun Lore/Universe and the music is awesome.

I can't wait to see some of the stuff users created!!

On top of that the game includes a complete toolkit for building your own Stories, so you can expand on the game as much as you want to.

-
pacing
18 positive · 18 negative · 3 mixed · 0 neutral
-
Cons: Kind-of slow paced, build/decision anxiety

You constantly hear about something epic going on somewhere else, but you're stuck at completing basic combat missions to "get to the epic thing happening".
-
- it kinda feels like it drags on for a while sometimes

level design

… be the kick ass character, even if you go into a support role like shamanism or decking, it's still got a lot of enjoyable moments and much more to do than returns, without the stripped out features of hong kong such as armor stats.

Great cyberpunk type world with good character customization and good strategic combat.

More character customization for your team and a streamlined interface and controls, along with upgraded save features, make the gameplay smoother.

And it looks really cool.

The grafik design is very good. This is how Shadowrun should look like.

In addition to the above mentioned the game features awesome style, captivating story and cool dialogues.

ai behavior

Pathfinding is poor.

The same can be said about your opponents, and some AI have a tendency to sit in the open.

The enemy AI can be too predictable at times.

stability
1 positive · 20 negative · 1 mixed · 0 neutral

This release is EXTREMELY buggy and freezes constantly, don't play this unless you are very patient.
-
Then completing the mission the hard way results in your character freezing in place because the game won't recognize when an enemy's turn is over (a persistent bug that happens in every single cyberspace scenario).

I couldn't complete the game because it just kept crashing and not letting me get any further.

controls
3 positive · 16 negative · 0 mixed · 0 neutral
-
Shadowrun Returns, is by current standards (2021) set by other, much larger game makers, a bit clunky, and not as intuitive as it could be.
-
- No native gamepad support
-
The game still badly needs some form of "undo move" option for situations in which you intend to attack a target and accidentally click the hex next to it, though.
-
-
developer conduct
1 positive · 14 negative · 0 mixed · 0 neutral
-
The best part is, its made by a "pro" studio and it is much worse then, ie, Stellar Tactics, made by one person.
-
changing review to a negative as been waiting over 1 week for support to answer why the game suddenly stopped working with no the decncy of a single response from steam support.
-
Bugs like this have been present for years now and the company has acknowledged them publicly but won't fix them apparently.
-
-
emotional impact
14 positive · 0 negative · 0 mixed · 0 neutral
-
It has stayed with me all this time.
-
It's been a while since i felt actual things for fictional characters in a game. Actual levels of concern, sympathy, sorrow, emotional connection.
-
Two weeks after finishing it, I'm still thinking about how good it was and how sad I was to leave my persona behind when the story ended.

-
exploration
9 positive · 3 negative · 1 mixed · 1 neutral
-
Where the Shadowrun Returns adventure (The Dead Man's Switch) was heavy-handedly linear, almost completely lacking in opportunities to simply explore the landscape and run missions unrelated to the main plot, Dragonfall has some minor characters with interests and concerns …
-
I also appreciate being able to venture off into the city and explore and I love the rpg elements they added.
-
The game has some parts that resemble puzzle games and secrets everywhere that can earn you a bigger paycheck.
-
-
performance
5 positive · 9 negative · 0 mixed · 0 neutral
-
Options are scarce and for some reason, the game runs terribly when you zoom out, dropping the framerate to 30 even though there was nothing special of the game.
-
Game has big optimizations problems even if it's just a 2D world with 3D characters (welcome back '90).
-
The controls are a bit clunky in the game and maybe im wrong but its locked to 60fps.
-
-
voice acting
1 positive · 12 negative · 0 mixed · 1 neutral
-
There is zero voice acting, so if you hate reading, this may not be the game for you.
-
It's a bit short (only about 25 hours or so), and I wish there was voice acting.
-
The lack of voice acting means you're reading a lot; thankfully the writers knew not to dump exposition on you and instead feed it to you through environmental storytelling and natural dialogue.
-
-
animation
2 positive · 4 negative · 3 mixed · 0 neutral
-
I thought the animation and art could've been far more dark.
-
It's like playing with Lego men. The UI's problems really manifest in the boring virtual reality/rigging sections, where buttons, skills, and movements frequently freeze the game and require bizarre input sequences to fix.
-
- Story is told via walls of text, with no animation whatsoever
-
-
realism
9 positive · 0 negative · 0 mixed · 0 neutral
-
Even with the story flaws that do lead to some extremely weird game-play, This release is the best of all 3 in terms of working the tabletop into a RPG.
-
A great transfer of TTRPG game to the vide game format.
-
I greatly enjoyed the original pen & paper Shadowrun RPG back in the early 1990s while in university, and Dragonfall comes oh so close to recreating those old campaigns, in the present day, on the PC.

A great standalone update to an already great DLC.
-
I am so glad this directors cut is a stand alone DLC because because reading from what other people have said, this is a great improvement and should stand alone away from what mess had occured during the original release.
-
Great addon to original game!

The worst part is I found out these bugs were reported over 8 years ago!
-
It's been a year and the game still has this problem.
-
between the corrupted saved files or the constant 'invisible' players and not being able to target anything, im not sure what im more pissed at - the fact i bought another one of their games or that i believed bugs would be fixed.

-
sound design
5 positive · 0 negative · 0 mixed · 1 neutral
-
Sound is also well done and while there isn't any voice acting the electronic music helps bring the game to life as well as the impactful sounds of the combat.
-
Add a soundtrack that has a good futuristic ring to it paired with typical, well working atmospheric elements for danger / combat / bleak and eerie feel and voila - a great Shadowrun game it is!
-
I enjoy the background noise with these game too so far.

How this report was made
- Population
- all Steam reviews of the game (every language, purchase type, and verdict), walked newest-first per window; only English-language reviews are analyzed
- Sample
- 797 English reviews, time-proportional draw over 146 windows (newest-first within each), taken from an all-language walk and kept English-only — where English is a minority the sample runs smaller than the draw, and every margin of error is computed at 797
- Aspect yield
- 640 of 797 analyzed reviews carry at least one aspect (80.3%); every share on this page divides by all 797
- Interval regime
- calm: standard margins of error for a share of a sample (Wilson interval), no widening needed
- Fetch paths
- 146 time windows fetched directly (windowed)
- Language mix
- 1,000 fetched: english 799 · russian 65 · german 23 · 19 more
- Steam-marked windows
- none flagged by Steam (Valve's off-topic flagging began March 2019)
- Marked share
- 0.0% of sample inside marked windows, under the 2% floor
- Narrative
- sentences failing the grounding gate were removed
- Evidence floor
- aspects and emergent themes appear only with 5+ supporting reviews; smaller counts sit at the classifier's false-positive floor
- Instrument readings
- measured once on the study corpus for this model and prompt: frozen calibration, not properties of this run
- · aspect tagging vs. human labels
- 0.801 [0.752–0.844] (F1 against a human-labeled test set; 1.0 is best)
- · quotes filed under the wrong aspect
- 11.6% [6.6–19.6] of quotes, measured by hand on a sample; lower is better — measured on the prior model (2026-08-05); re-measurement pending
- · independent model vs. production labels
- 0.791 [0.772–0.810] (F1 of the production labeler against an independent judge model) — measured on the prior model (2026-07-25); re-measurement pending
