Frostpunk
analyzed 2026-08-14 · sample of 398 English reviews across the whole review history
Gameplay is the most frequently discussed aspect, with players describing a strategy experience focused on survival rather than domination. The difficulty is a recurring point of praise, with one player noting that "Even on the normal difficulty you can die/lose easily so it is a challenge." Story and atmosphere are almost universally praised, with reviewers mentioning "bleak stories and hard choices" and an "incredibly dense atmosphere." The art style, music, and emotional impact also draw consistent positive comments, including "awesome looking steampunk setting" and "the ending really made me tear up." Opinion splits appear around content amount and replayability, where some players see "lots of different scenarios to play" while others find the value lacking. The learning curve is a notable criticism, with players citing "a steep learning curve for new players" and the absence of a tutorial. Stability, UI, and performance issues recur as negative points, including "Game keeps crashing midway" and complaints about unreadable text. Some players also criticize the characters, saying "people whinning all the time," and a few mention bugs such as "survivors being escorted to your city die randomly."

If you're into challenging city builders that offer a decent story line to follow, then this might be the game you're looking for.

I like how it tells stories and as a player you always have to fight your way out to find the best way to play the scenario.
-
The pre-made levels are all fantastic challenges with bleak stories and hard choices.

city building part) to get the feeling your decisions matter that much.
-
Oh yeah, and in order to keep order in the city, you can go between either becoming a Totalitarian Faccist State, or a Totalitarian Theocratic State, or you can stay a benevolent leader, it all depends on what you view as necessary.
-
Well, at least on the first play through when you are taking the choices seriously.

Very fun game with many hours left in it to explore the different things to do in the game, was quite fun becomming the people's god and doing public executions and sending the faith police to whip …

replayability
15 positive · 7 negative · 1 mixed · 0 neutral
-
Just about the only game I keep going back to and playing through a couple of times per year.
-
Fun but got a touch repetitious playing the scenarios through once had tried the different approaches (child labour vs automatons, authoritarian vs religious, etc) however think with some time in between I could pick up and enjoy playing one or two scenarios again.
-
for me this is very unique for a strategic game, makes me play more and try to fine different outcomes and check different scenarios.

There is a steep learning curve for new players and I died/lost multiple times when I first played for this reason

Great fun to play if you can get through the initial frustration.

It has a few quirks and the usability is not really user-friendly in some places - but I think that's part of the game.

Especially the DLC where you had to build the generator before the cold hit was very enjoyable (though quite difficult), and I can very much recommend this game!
-
I loved original Frostpunk and the Last Autumn DLC reminded me of the tension and fun I had playing Frostpunk when it first came out.
-
Lastly the DLC, if you think the main game will be problematic, the DLC is downright bloodborne\demon souls on a slower pace.

Great game that made me care for my workers even though I tossed their corpses into a ditch because I had no time nor resources to build a cemetery.

It was the honor of leading such an amazing people in there even tho they constantly complain about my leadership :D

Placing roads is also a breeze. Removing them, too. The unique radial grid design really lends itself to this. You'll have to play to understand what I mean with this.
-
Frostpunk scales its world beautifully; from the unique orbital settlement layout that feels like it could only be home to a few hundred souls beholden to the furnace, to the simple cartographic representation of the surrounding wilderness.

performance

The only notable issue I can think of for the game at the moment is that there is a minor lag spike when the game hits midnight near the end of the game when you have a large city.
-
The game can be a bit laggy at times, but that is the only problem I have had with it.
-
The audio stutter during cutscenes still isn't fixed after it's been reported by multiple users for at least a year.

I love how these people act like how people would given the circumstance, though I do wish there was a way you could modify the peoples' schedules outside of a shift lengthener, but that's a me thing coming from Rimworld.
-
The learning curve is pretty easy after an hour or so and the AI is fairly smart.
-
Another good point of this game is that your citizens' lives are fully simulated, but they aren't stupid.

i really want to say all those good parts in this game but I can't because of the twisted values you guys force the player to accept.

And after several emails, support basically told me to skip the cutscenes so I can "enjoy" the game.

How this report was made
- Population
- all Steam reviews of the game (every language, purchase type, and verdict), walked newest-first per window; only English-language reviews are analyzed
- Sample
- 398 English reviews, time-proportional draw over 101 windows (newest-first within each), taken from an all-language walk and kept English-only — where English is a minority the sample runs smaller than the draw, and every margin of error is computed at 398
- Aspect yield
- 246 of 398 analyzed reviews carry at least one aspect (61.8%); every share on this page divides by all 398
- Interval regime
- calm: standard margins of error for a share of a sample (Wilson interval), no widening needed
- Fetch paths
- 101 time windows fetched directly (windowed)
- Language mix
- 1,000 fetched: english 398 · schinese 145 · russian 142 · 24 more
- Steam-marked windows
- none flagged by Steam (Valve's off-topic flagging began March 2019)
- Marked share
- 0.0% of sample inside marked windows, under the 2% floor
- Narrative
- passed the grounding gate first try
- Evidence floor
- aspects and emergent themes appear only with 5+ supporting reviews; smaller counts sit at the classifier's false-positive floor
- Instrument readings
- measured once on the study corpus for this model and prompt: frozen calibration, not properties of this run
- · aspect tagging vs. human labels
- 0.766 [0.713–0.811] (F1 against a human-labeled test set; 1.0 is best)
- · quotes filed under the wrong aspect
- 11.6% [6.6–19.6] of quotes, measured by hand on a sample; lower is better
- · independent model vs. production labels
