Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen
analyzed 2026-09-24 · sample of 579 English reviews across the whole review history
Across 579 sampled reviews, combat is the most frequently praised aspect, with 116 of the 143 mentions positive. Players describe it as "the best combat and general movement mechanics of any game I've ever played", and build variety draws 35 positive mentions out of 38. Customization, replayability, and price value also skew heavily positive, while the pawn system splits opinion: of 64 reviews mentioning AI behavior, 29 are positive and 29 negative, with one calling the companion AI "companion AI isn’t half bad". Criticism clusters around quest design, balance, and interface. Quest design draws 35 negative mentions against 9 positive, with complaints that "The narration is non-existent which makes it impossible to understand the quests". Balance is 32 negative out of 36, UI 31 negative out of 34, and pacing 16 negative out of 18. Story mentions lean negative at 47 of 93, and controls at 18 of 30, largely over keyboard and mouse. Opinion divides on graphics, characters, and multiplayer, each with comparable positive and negative counts. Players also raise grind, the save system, fast travel, the camera, and crafting, none of which the numbers here resolve.

Still has the best combat and general movement mechanics of any game I've ever played.

And then you do, and fall in love with the game all over again.

Combat is fun and satisfying .

story

The story and plot also can be improved.
-
The story is very short and you can easily beat the game in 8~ hours, not including Dark Arisen, but that's a whole other beast.
-
I soon got bored of the quests which just involved killing and collecting and stuck to the main story which was not the best.

Once again Capcom has made a very intuitive and fun game for me to really appreciate and spend nearly 100+ hours in.
-
This game is so great in many many ways such as the story, music, gameplay, and the atmosphere.
-
Good game, unique mechanics for an RPG.

If you like good RGPs without crap-tons of min-maxing skills, then this is the game for you.
-
And anyone who has played monster hunter or devil may cry will feel a lot of similarities in the combat but it also has some unique flair itself in the combat and in the RPG systems itself.
-
* leveling and upgrading is addicting

Graphics, good for the time.

Also at some point I got a ton of quests and I was not sure which ones would fail if I talked to the Duke and progressed the story, which is a bummer.
-
The narration is non-existent which makes it impossible to understand the quests or the lore, it's a shame because it looks interesting.
-
… number of the boss fights rely on a 'climbing' mechanic, which does not at all work well with a keyboard and mouse, 3) There are a number of quests of the "find rare item" type, where, to be blunt, you have zero chance of just stumbling across the item (worse, some of them require you to combine …

I like the flexibility of being able to change your class and armor at pretty much any time, it allows you to go for the "meta" or you can just mash some stupid skills together for fun.
-
A really fun Action RPG, with a lot of different ways to play and fun places to explore.
-
I am playing as archer/dagger build.

difficulty

Its no to dificult and not to easy :)
-
The first time you make it all the way through you actually feel like you've accomplished an incredible feat given the overall difficulty especially if attempted at a lower level.
-
I played on hard and it is certainly hard, especially if you rush the story like I did (wanted to play another game).

- Lots of unique looking character customization options for yourself and your pawn companion.

Also you can make hot men so that just makes it the best game ever.

And it feels like enemies only have two types of attacks "no damage at all" and "that random hit almost killed you".
-
The endgame island "BitterBlack Isle" really is geared for ranged classes or spellcasters, which bummed be out as someone who was loving the warrior class until the end game.
-
Bad inventory, bad map markers, bad quest lists, advertising keyboard support when it's ungodly unpleasant and borderline unusable, bad encounter balancing, bad difficulty advertisement.

1 positive · 31 negative · 1 mixed · 1 neutral
-
The weapon menu and inventory are clunky as hell.
-
Fortunately I found support for a 21:9 mode on my 32:9 monitor, although the map doesn't seem to work quite right.
-
They made a button to show you where a quest is on the map but it doesn't work - every time it just points to the middle of the map.

I have yet started playing the new game plus content and cant wait to venture into the world again .

… uninspiring and unhelpful things (very annoying), 2) A number of the boss fights rely on a 'climbing' mechanic, which does not at all work well with a keyboard and mouse, 3) There are a number of quests of the "find rare item" type, where, to be blunt, you have zero chance of just stumbling …
-
The controls for keyboard are an awkward mix of keyboard and mouse where sometimes the mouse will be able to select things and sometimes it wont be.
-
- The climbing mechanics are a little baffling as its a mixture of character and camera based so at random times you will just turn around and climb in the opposite direction.

And don't even get me started with Grigori. Recommend for any RPG fan.

PS: the DLC only makes it better.
-
Came back to the game a year after this review was written and decided to tackle the DLC content (I haven't even beaten the main story yet) and that is one hella addicting piece of content I cannot stop grinding for higher numbers.
-
I love the combat and Dark Arisen update from years ago added hard core complexity to the mix.

A really fun Action RPG, with a lot of different ways to play and fun places to explore.

I am still discovering new things in this game to this day and I cannot express my excitement for the sequel that was announced recently.
-
Combat,exploring ,everything is great!

-
level design
6 positive · 15 negative · 1 mixed · 0 neutral
-
Combat is mashing X and Y and the game just takes you on rails from one encounter to the next.
-
The post-game areas are generally too large and samey. The DLC's (and, indeed, the game's) strongest weapons and armor are almost all locked behind what's essentially a gacha system of finding the appropriate leveled item (1, 2, or 3) and spending rift crystal currency.
-
The one downside to Dragon's dogma is it takes awhile to travel the map as it's pretty big and there are few ways of fast travel, Dark arisen fortunately remedy this with items you can get early on, saving time on trips that can span hours and putting more into slaying monsters.

This game be janky and littered with flaws but.
-
The final nail in the coffin was the dragon confrontation bugging out on me.

… Some of the dialog seems to imply that you know / should know some element of the story that has not been made clear, 5) Some quests just randomly fail for no apparent reason.

-The endless tutorials

It took me a while to get into this one. It is pretty boring until you get to a decent level and get better equipment.

A very weak introduction with little guidance followed by an awesome story, interesting combat, and unique party system.

A fantastic soundtrack too! Keeping in mind this game was made in 2012 I could imagine it being revolutionary at its time!

Game runs smoothly enough, controller input does work but it'll still say the keyboard buttons for input, you just have to press buttons to figure it out at the beginning.

The performance is great when fighting the final daemon.

Classic game and runs well on PC.

game length
8 positive · 6 negative · 0 mixed · 4 neutral

All in all, worth your money, you will spend many hours with this game.

Once thats ends however, you are left with by and large nothing but a sense of satisfaction, and a good 150 hours killed in total.
-
It will immerse you in the game and add plenty more hours.

pacing
1 positive · 16 negative · 1 mixed · 0 neutral
-
Boring, boring, boring, fun occurs, repeat.
-
Near the halfway point, you can see how the story just cuts straight to "okay cool let's kill the dragon" and it's a little disappointing.
-
It has some interesting stuff thematically but it goes by way too fast and feels a bit like an afterthought at times.

Great game, it even comes without mtx and a cpu eating drm!
-
If you’ve tried EVERY fix known to MANKIND to fix the stuttering for two hours, yet you have gotten zero improvements - I am here to tell you the GOG version worked for me out of the box.
-
One of the best games finally came to PC, in a decent port for a change.
-
-
voice acting
4 positive · 10 negative · 0 mixed · 1 neutral
-
The pawn chatter is INCREDIBLY annoying but since they often state what the weakness is of what you are fighting it's detrimental to turn it off in the settings.
-
The voice work is shoddy, the sounds are generic, you have to spam the interaction button to cycle through dialogue, which you don't seem to have much (or any) agency with, and the game pretty much has decided everything about your character's life and background before you even make your character.
-
However, their voice lines quickly get repetitive and the lack of banter that we've come to expect from Dragon Age 1 & 2 companions is sorely missed.

You can play as a child with a God complex who is worshipped by a legion of NPCs whose sole purpose is to serve and revere you, even addressing you as ‘master.

The story is amazing, I have the normal version on Steam and the HD on XBox, and the best thing about this game is that every new game you start, you can have different approaches and different outcomes.

Immediately got hooked. Normally not a big fan of rpg but this and Witcher 3 did it for me.

… item (worse, some of them require you to combine two or more _different_ rare items), 4) Some of the dialog seems to imply that you know / should know some element of the story that has not been made clear, 5) Some quests just randomly fail for no apparent reason.
-
The writing is kinda ♥♥♥♥ and feels like bad Shakespeare most of the time (except Grigori I love him), the combat is incredibly imbalanced and at times can be impossible but also easy …
-
There's nothing wrong with not having a voiced player character, but without many, if any, dialogue options, many of the story beats fall flat.

mods
7 positive · 2 negative · 0 mixed · 0 neutral
-
In fact, since the game only really checks to see if your pawn is legal when you upload it, mods are pretty safe to use as long as they don't significantly alter your pawn (the big one is making sure they're not in a hybrid class since you normally can't put your pawn in those; definite insta-flag).
-
Mods can fix ALL of the cons, especially the level-up stats being dependant on your class.
-
There's a mod on Nexus that will fix that;

I tried to return a quest and the game crashed, loaded back in and that quest is permabroken - amazing!

kept crashing after one minute of run time and when it ran for longer it was outputting 11 frames per second, mind you my rig is a 4090 with a 13th gen intel i9-13900k soooooo.

Performance can be meh and the game crashes when you alt-tab, so save very often

art style

-
I love the combination of West and East styles in this game.
-
The gameplay is pretty solid art direction is good for almost a 10-year-old game the controls are more to be desired but it was meant to be played on Controller so it's not that big a deal it still does …
-
Its a really enjoyable game, great graphics, you can climb monsters, hang on to eagles as you attack them with flame daggers and its got a magical and unique quirkiness that is so refreshing in a world where so many games and gamers take themselves too seriously.

animation
3 positive · 2 negative · 0 mixed · 0 neutral
-
The animations, specifically for spells, are incredible and make you feel way more powerful than mage/sorcerers in other RPGs.
-
All classic D&D monsters are greatly designed and animated. The draw distance even on max setting is ok, but leaves something to be desired, occasionally you can see pop-ins.
-
The rare cut scenes are beautifully animated and the voice acting is surprisingly good!

This game personifies why Capcom should just give up. I know it's old, but I just expected more.
-
♥♥♥♥ Crapcom and its anti-modding DRM.
-
I've tried to get a refund from Steam, but they still refuse to satisfactorily respond or address my complaints, only sending automated responses claiming they "reviewed" my request. I highly recommend the game itself; It is well worth the money.

How this report was made
- Population
- all Steam reviews of the game (every language, purchase type, and verdict), walked newest-first per window; only English-language reviews are analyzed
- Sample
- 579 English reviews, time-proportional draw over 129 windows (newest-first within each), taken from an all-language walk and kept English-only — where English is a minority the sample runs smaller than the draw, and every margin of error is computed at 579
- Aspect yield
- 319 of 579 analyzed reviews carry at least one aspect (55.1%); every share on this page divides by all 579
- Interval regime
- calm: standard margins of error for a share of a sample (Wilson interval), no widening needed
- Fetch paths
- 129 time windows fetched directly (windowed)
- Language mix
- 1,000 fetched: english 580 · brazilian 99 · schinese 87 · 20 more
- Steam-marked windows
- none flagged by Steam (Valve's off-topic flagging began March 2019)
- Marked share
- 0.0% of sample inside marked windows, under the 2% floor
- Narrative
- passed the grounding gate first try
- Evidence floor
- aspects and emergent themes appear only with 5+ supporting reviews; smaller counts sit at the classifier's false-positive floor
- Instrument readings
- measured once on the study corpus for this model and prompt: frozen calibration, not properties of this run
- · aspect tagging vs. human labels
- 0.801 [0.752–0.844] (F1 against a human-labeled test set; 1.0 is best)
- · quotes filed under the wrong aspect
- 11.6% [6.6–19.6] of quotes, measured by hand on a sample; lower is better — measured on the prior model (2026-08-05); re-measurement pending
- · independent model vs. production labels
- 0.791 [0.772–0.810] (F1 of the production labeler against an independent judge model) — measured on the prior model (2026-07-25); re-measurement pending
