Fallout 4
analyzed 2026-09-24 · sample of 565 English reviews across the whole review history
Across 565 sampled reviews, combat draws praise in 42 of 49 mentions, and exploration is unanimously positive across all 24. The world and its atmosphere come up warmly, with players describing "some great locations and places to visit" and a "big, fun to explore world with tons of little details and hidden places to discover". Mods are the most-mentioned aspect at 17.9%, leaning positive, and settlement building recurs as a theme players raise. Criticism clusters around bugs, stability, and performance: 47 of 51 bug mentions are negative, all 24 stability mentions are negative, and 24 of 30 performance mentions are negative, with complaints like sitting "in a loading screen for 15 minutes". Writing and player choice also skew negative, and developer conduct draws 25 mentions with none positive. Opinion splits on quest design, which is evenly divided at 16 positive and 16 negative, and on the story, where 31 of 65 mentions are negative. Progression and DLC divide similarly. Praise concentrates on customization, content amount, and addictiveness, while the RPG elements remain a point of contention.

Even the mods were great.

Fallout 4 has its problems, being lighter on the RPG elements, infected with the Mass Effect dialog wheel, and having the standard collection of Bethesda bugs.

play for gun not for story
-
Though I don't like the main story as much as I did 3, they are some great locations and places to visit in the game and the dlc actually added some more depth to the game instead of just being aspects of the game seemingly held back just to release as a dlc.

However, you will still find bugs in the main storyline, which was very disappointing.

… THE GAME AND ENJOY IT FOR WHAT IT IS THIS ISH IS BUSSSSSIIIIINNNN everyone says its trash but I love it and how much there is to the story and side quest.

Follow the quests or do what you want - but have fun! Thanks, Steam!

It also has amazing missions, cool armor, and sweet weapons.

player choice
6 positive · 24 negative · 1 mixed · 0 neutral
-
Also, there's no consequence to basically any dialogue choice (unless you count sarcastic being funny as ♥♥♥♥) and you can basically do whatever you want and it won't impact your play through all that much.
-
[*] I have no idea how Bethesda could not be incredibly embarrassed by its hardcoded 4-choice dialogue system in an RPG title.
-
I love the game but the options for who to side with are pure dookie.

love the game but the fps is so bad
-
- terrible optimization [especially noticeable through things including but not limited to framerate dips in certain areas and long load times. also it's really crash happy]
-
Imagine buying FO4 at full price, and you have to mod the ♥♥♥♥ out of it just so you don't have to sit in a loading screen for 15 minutes whenever you pass through any door between the Commonwealth and anywhere else.

… the gameplay isn't just for me and the stuffs in it just makes it unenjoyable for me to sit down for hours playing it, besides that, the DLC just plain sucks what the hell?
-
Instead of adding DLC's to the game the developers need to take care of the many bugs that plague it, especially in the main story line.
-
If you buy this game, don't get the DLCs

[*] The main villain's plan appears to have been forgotten by the writers.

There are some bugs that keep me from finishing some quests, though, and I do agree that the conversation wheel is unfortunately not the best thing.

Fallout 4 is Amazing, crashes too much but still amazing.

my load times are 4x what they were, my game sometimes hangs, player randomly walks like overcumbered when not, and alt tabing sometimes just breaks the game.

☑ Good

The graphics are great and the game has been developed in all the right areas Some people will run through the game but as in Skyrim the side quests are the key to play and get the full statisfaction of the game, walk to and dont use Fast Travel.

progression
9 positive · 10 negative · 3 mixed · 0 neutral
-
- the role-playing mechanics are largely watered down from previous Fallout games
-
Such a classic, very good game play mechanics compared to Fallout 3 and New Vegas, wish the RPG aspects were a bit more in depth like New Vegas, but still a great game for anyone looking to play Fallout.
-
Unfortunately, the game is pretty easy, and after some time, there is no real challange, no more skills you'd take, and the gameplay itself is just lackluster.

They keep breaking the game trying to push paid mods, and refuse to institute versioning so that you can just rollback to a working build of the game.
-
but i guess ill have to keep putting off playing this game for even longer now since that Mod is more than likely gonna have huge delays, all of this to push people to go into the store so that they can give them more money.
-
Creation Club isn't bad all it needs is REAL DLC like Far Harbour and Nuka World if they start doing that with the Creation Club then it would be worth it right now don't buy the small things and just wait till they put actual content on it just use free mods till then.

-
… finished watching the series, only to find out that my game doesn't work properly anymore because they thought it was a good idea to "fix" things that have been actually fixed by modders years ago, effectively breaking every mod in the game.
-
the new update however has screwed everything up.

There are quite some companion, although the AI is just terrible.
-
-Dumb companions sometimes.
-
NPC's are bland as ever 90% of the time: Even though most of the voices are nice, most NPC's are bland as can get, and have no impact on the world at all if you're nice or mean to them, they don't really care.
-
-
voice acting
6 positive · 1 negative · 1 mixed · 0 neutral
-
The story is nicely put together and the voice acting was well done.
-
Voices are well done for the most part: Most of the voices for the characters are well done and fit most of the time, they all sound pretty believable.
-
The voice acting is on point, with face movements lacking and sometimes out of sync with the dialogue.
-
-
balance
1 positive · 6 negative · 0 mixed · 0 neutral
-
Most weapons are useless: After you get a few set weapons, everything else is useless, all I've been using is a fat man, a heavily upgraded pistol, a smg, a assault rifle, and a sniper, everything else is …
-
But the RNG is really frustrating.
-
My only complaint with the combat is enemies turning into bullet sponges the higher and higher levels you get, which can turn the combat into a slog, although enough variety is shown in enemies, and the AI - surprisingly dynamic for a Beth game- keeps encounters fresh.

When I encounter minor animation or clipping glitches in such a vast, but incredibly detailed world, I am willing to forgive that.

How this report was made
- Population
- all Steam reviews of the game (every language, purchase type, and verdict), walked newest-first per window; only English-language reviews are analyzed
- Sample
- 565 English reviews, time-proportional draw over 131 windows (newest-first within each), taken from an all-language walk and kept English-only — where English is a minority the sample runs smaller than the draw, and every margin of error is computed at 565
- Aspect yield
- 300 of 565 analyzed reviews carry at least one aspect (53.1%); every share on this page divides by all 565
- Interval regime
- calm: standard margins of error for a share of a sample (Wilson interval), no widening needed
- Fetch paths
- 131 time windows fetched directly (windowed)
- Language mix
- 1,000 fetched: english 713 · russian 46 · spanish 46 · 23 more
- Steam-marked windows
- none flagged by Steam (Valve's off-topic flagging began March 2019)
- Marked share
- 0.0% of sample inside marked windows, under the 2% floor
- Narrative
- passed the grounding gate first try
- Evidence floor
- aspects and emergent themes appear only with 5+ supporting reviews; smaller counts sit at the classifier's false-positive floor
- Instrument readings
- measured once on the study corpus for this model and prompt: frozen calibration, not properties of this run
- · aspect tagging vs. human labels
- 0.801 [0.752–0.844] (F1 against a human-labeled test set; 1.0 is best)
- · quotes filed under the wrong aspect
- 11.6% [6.6–19.6] of quotes, measured by hand on a sample; lower is better — measured on the prior model (2026-08-05); re-measurement pending
- · independent model vs. production labels
- 0.791 [0.772–0.810] (F1 of the production labeler against an independent judge model) — measured on the prior model (2026-07-25); re-measurement pending
