Remnant: From the Ashes
analyzed 2026-10-13 · sample of 520 English reviews across the whole review history
Across 520 sampled reviews, combat and multiplayer draw the most comment, and multiplayer is the clear strong point: 101 of 116 mentions are positive, with players noting it "would probably be better if played CO-OP" and "maybe even great if you grab a friend". Combat splits more, praised for "interesting ways to defeat enemies" but criticized for balance, where bosses with "an insanely huge health pool" turn into "a bullet sponge". Difficulty and gameplay lean positive, and replayability, graphics, and build variety are consistently well received. Criticism clusters around story and level design. Of 63 story mentions, 40 are negative, with "Story has potential but badly executed"; level design draws 27 negative mentions against 15 positive, described as "very empty and linear". Bugs, stability, UI, and pacing also skew negative, alongside recurring talk of grind and bosses. Opinion divides on progression and content amount, each near an even split, while price value, world, lore, and atmosphere are mostly praised. Players repeatedly mention consulting guides, and the DLC comes up as something that "does solve come of that".

Great game with good gun play.

This review may sound mostly negative, but overall this is a really enjoyable game, it would probably be better if played CO-OP.
-
Visually pleasing, quite playable, maybe even great if you grab a friend.
-
The best part is everything is playable with two friends & the co-op feels so smooth compared to other games.

The survival mode (rougelike) is also a lot of fun.

Aside from the minor gameplay bugs, it has good gameplay mechanic and replayability.

story
18 positive · 40 negative · 2 mixed · 3 neutral
-
Great game, but it ends so abruptly and the final boss is horrible.
-
lame, uninspired story with half ass mechanics from a handful of other popular games.
-
The gameplay / story / npc models just feels as an okish third-person shooter that are not attractive enough for me to invest time to fix all the bugs before going into the git gud part.

-
level design
15 positive · 27 negative · 8 mixed · 1 neutral
-
First of all game is very linear and 'normal' difficulty is way too easy compared to DS.
-
Maps in Remnant are very empty and linear with barely any reason to explore (not like there's much to explore anyway, again, very linear).
-
… you won't see the infuriating canyon town on Rhom, for example) and bosses will be different, but the levels themselves rarely ever feel unique relative to other levels of the same environment type.
-
-
replayability
35 positive · 7 negative · 0 mixed · 1 neutral
-
This game is made to be played multiple times and is fun to play with friends or even solo.
-
High replayability and significant differences between the worlds keeps me coming back.
-
I definitely suggest this game if you are up for a challenge and a game that has PLENTY reasons, in fact, rewards replayability!

I won't comment on the graphics or the like - that stuff is all amazing.

balance
7 positive · 29 negative · 2 mixed · 0 neutral
-
I could write an entire essay about it, but to sum it up: unexplained mechanics that you need to look up online, unavoidable and constant damage ticks, an insanely huge health pool that turns it into a bullet sponge and, worst of all, the boss has exactly 1 attack.
-
Boss fights compound this frustration by doubling down on the enemy swarms; almost every single boss is flanked by an army of adds, and are consequently outrageous on higher difficulties.
-
However, weird sour spot mid-game when you level your gear too much, since enemies scale on your gear.
-
-
progression
16 positive · 17 negative · 1 mixed · 2 neutral
-
I didn't like the traits unlocking as you play instead of being open from the beginning, it limits character builds in early to mid game.
-
But to survive harder modes you need the weapon and armor upgrades. And to upgrade your gear you have to play the game. And when you upgrade your gear enough to deal with hard mode, you finish the game.
-
EXP Curve is kind of nuts, but it's a decent dungeon crawler with good weapons and good gunplay.

price value
22 positive · 9 negative · 4 mixed · 0 neutral
-
it's not exactly the most-polished, but it is a lot of fun, and it's a solid 30-40 hours with DLC, which I'd say is more than enough bang for your buck.
-
Imperfect, but fun game to buy on sale.
-
I can't really complain, because I bought it on sale. I will buy the sequel on sale when it gets a little cheaper next year.

You have tons of weapon choices, build/talent choices, and class choices all mixed into a souls like shooter.

Once you have things unlocked, the amount of ways to play the game just increase exponentially.

Enemy and gear variety is on a scale rarely seen anymore, emphasising different builds and approaches to different biomes.

content amount

it has a nice amount of different enemies and bosses and weapons
-
I only played through once but that play through was a solid 10 hours of fun and I know it has a TON of bosses that I didnt get to fight which could probably add atleast another 10-20 + whatever DLC is out there.
-
The game itself got a nice story to it, and adventure mode is coming, that is nice. hope it gets more features in the future

Only cons for me : sometime you get stuck between barrels and walls.
-
… bad review of this game its because i try to get all of the achievements in the game and this DLC is the worst its not fun at all, only one glitched achievement but its doable took me abit less then 70hrs, looking forward to REMNANT 2 :)

Very fun game with great DLC.
-
Their is allot, and i mean allot, of rng when it comes to earning weapons and abilities, but the dlc does solve come of that.
-
With the DLCs included, which I recommend you buy, there are five very different worlds in total, plus Ward 13.

performance

Graphic optimization is also better than fromsoftware titles, and runs smooth at low spec devices.
-
The visuals hold up really well, and performance is great.
-
Pretty fun game and ran well for me is a bit of grind if unlucky with RNG on the loot and if playing solo much better as a co op.
-
-
pacing
4 positive · 10 negative · 2 mixed · 0 neutral
-
But its too story focused, the sound mixing was atrocious that i couldn't hear a character talking to me, so i thought they were mute.
-
the game is good with friends, a but too boring at times, and had some other issues, but at the end of the day I had a lot of fun.
-
The beginning of the game should be gripping and it simply isn't.

stability

I actually played the game for only 48 minutes and already encountered 6 crashes for unknown reasons.
-
Decent game, 100%ed it back in 2024, collected all the items but PC issues caused save corruption backup should actually work as a backup and not a decoration
-
EDIT: god ♥♥♥♥♥♥ damn 4 hours in and my profiles already corrupted, and hundreds of other people are dealing with the same.

ai behavior
4 positive · 8 negative · 0 mixed · 2 neutral
-
more so, the aggro logic is broken and at times the enemy may fight you if it spawned close to you and sometimes, it ignores you and runs past you
-
Every basic mob is the same, slow basic attack and can throw something at range.
-
The game does have an obnoxious habit of spawning enemies behind you or at least in a place where they surround you. While Ive heard people praise the sound, I have to say the sound cues have been pretty bad at telling me when Im surrounded.

Unrelenting Enimes, tough as Nails Boss and more Secreats then you can shake a stick at!
-
its alot of fun graphics arent the best but its like a elden ring game kind of more of an exploration game with random hidden objectives just wish you could jump lol
-
Plus, there's a lot of secret quests and hidden items, as one would expect from a Souls-inspired game.

lore
10 positive · 1 negative · 1 mixed · 0 neutral
-
The way you learn lore is pretty cool too, kind of like fallout
-
Lore and worldbuilding is interesting, especially for the locales that aren't Earth, but it's mostly just "hey there's an ancient evil, go shoot it in the face".
-
Still its own game obviously, generally looks good and runs well, has good voice acting and some interesting lore.

And the game is such a massive hit, that the devs already said, they want to support it for a long time with fresh and new content.
-
Gunfire is updating the game 1-2 times weekly making sure balancing and scaling are working properly. They plan on releasing adventure mode so people won't have to play through the entire game just …
-
I am glad they are adding more to it!)

Each world has multiple areas, but the map only shows the area you’re currently in. You can see where you’ve been and where your friends are, but little else.

art style

There's lots of variety of weapons, and the aesthetics of every world- while not the best graphics-wise- are jaw-dropping.
-
The game certainly has an artistic perspective that is refreshing but, like many other Perfect World Entertainment games, it feels like a pizza that wasn't completely baked.
-
Good, solid lore, good visual design, nice gameplay, and what's most important - really unique playtrough, for as much as you can get it XD

characters
1 positive · 6 negative · 0 mixed · 0 neutral
-
The early game sets up a bunch of characters at home base, but does very little with them; they're all but forgotten by the endgame, with nothing new to say.
-
Your characters are not given much, if any, backstory, there are VERY few cutscenes to explain the story, and it relies heavily on journals to tell the story.
-
Dialogue is delivered by very wooden-looking character models, and I really, REALLY wish there was a way to stop the protagonist from repeating the same lines over and over when they kill an enemy / get hit / decide that it's nap time.

customization
3 positive · 4 negative · 0 mixed · 0 neutral

There are skins in this game, which we never unlocked because we didn't know where to find the "Glowing Fragment".

*add more unique armor to the game would great
-
Shallow cosmetic customization might as well not exist
-
-
quest design
1 positive · 6 negative · 0 mixed · 0 neutral
-
My main complaint is the dungeons are mostly copy-paste samey after awhile, and the game does no job telling you what to do at all (but to be fair its mostly linear to progress).
-
have to randomly land on a map that randomly has the elf merchant, randomly has an infector enemy and randomly has a queen boss.
-
I wish they added more puzzles to the game that made you think or explore to try and find a solution.

-
community
3 positive · 1 negative · 1 mixed · 0 neutral
-
this is a game that, for me, would be impossible to play without checking online guides.
-
I fully recommend Remnant as gunfire is supporting their game with help from the community.
-
The game does not necessarily explain itself terribly well so I'd recommend looking at a wiki if you want to find something specifically, also note that nearly anything that can be found in story mode can also be found in an adventure map of the same location.

player choice
2 positive · 3 negative · 0 mixed · 0 neutral
-
Once you do have choices, you lack a LOT of the context.
-
From the illusion of choice in the dialogue, to no character build/development/advancement, it does not have anything making me feel connected to the game or characters in it.
-
In Remnant upon death you lose nothing.

How this report was made
- Population
- all Steam reviews of the game (every language, purchase type, and verdict), walked newest-first per window; only English-language reviews are analyzed
- Sample
- 520 English reviews, time-proportional draw over 87 windows (newest-first within each), taken from an all-language walk and kept English-only — where English is a minority the sample runs smaller than the draw, and every margin of error is computed at 520
- Aspect yield
- 345 of 520 analyzed reviews carry at least one aspect (66.3%); every share on this page divides by all 520
- Interval regime
