Return of the Obra Dinn
analyzed 2026-09-01 · sample of 592 English reviews across the whole review history
Players consistently praise the core detective loop, describing it as a "fun and unique detective/puzzle game" and noting that the "story and gameplay was enthralling". The story itself is a frequent highlight, with one player calling it "a murder mystery with a great story." The art style is often mentioned favorably, with one player noting the "coloration is only monochromatic, but I feel that this is a good thing." Music and atmosphere are near-universal positives, with players citing "the excellent music" and an experience that is "Really immersive and fun!" The most significant point of criticism is the pacing, which is overwhelmingly described in negative terms, including "all the waiting time after finding new bodies" and a game that "starts out pretty slow." The user interface is another sore spot, with players expressing a desire for "a fast travel system to individual memories" and wishing "the book could have been somehow easier or more interactive." Opinion splits on difficulty and replayability: some find the challenge compelling because "the clues to figure out who everyone is are there if you look hard enough," while others find it frustrating. Similarly, while some find the game "addicting its hard to put down," others note that "once you know the solution... there's not really a reason to replay it."

art style
78 positive · 7 negative · 5 mixed · 1 neutral
-
I had initially been worried the art style would hurt my eyes, but it was never an issue.
-
The coloration is only monochromatic, but I feel that this is a good thing as it not only fits the time period of the games story, but also by coincidence allows the game to be an IDEAL choice for puzzle lovers who suffer from colorblindness.
-
1 bit was a bold choice, but one which fits the game perfectly.

difficulty

Some of the identities of crew members are fairly obvious, some are fairly hard, but the clues to figure out who everyone is are there if you look hard enough.
-
It is difficult to deduct the fate of all crew member and the game doesn't hold your hand at all through it, but that's what's so intriguing.
-
This game is an indie masterpiece that challenged me enough that I brought out a notepad to start taking notes and it somehow ADDED TO THE FUN!

music

The music, while short lived, is also very appropriately used.
-
Oh and by the way this madman composed the excellent music himself too.
-
Beautiful music, a compelling mystery, just an overall wonderful experience all around.

graphics

I quite enjoyed the overall theme of the game and the graphics were very well detailed.
-
The visuals are in credible match that increases the game ambiance, reminiscent of an old graphical text adventure or an early point and click game like Myst (but obviously with amazing performance).
-
Really great visuals, sound design, story, and mechanics.

there's not really a reason to replay it, which is a shame because the game also feels a bit on the short side.

If you're getting more then 10 hours of playtime out of this game, I'll be very impressed.

wonderful game, if maybe a little short.

replayability

-
Cons: Limited replay value.
-
One year ago on Christmas I thought about replaying it, but I realized I remembered too much of it to do so.
-
Lastly, it's a puzzle game - as obvious and as dumb as that may sound, once you know the solution... there's not really a reason to replay it, which is a shame because the game also feels a bit on the short side.

pacing
3 positive · 23 negative · 0 mixed · 0 neutral
-
One annoying thing about the game was all the waiting time after finding new bodies.
-
Game starts out pretty slow but really gets enjoyable once you get in to the swing of things.
-
I really don't understand how this game is "overwhelmingly positive" when it's basically just 80% waiting around.

voice acting

The art style and wonderful voice acting had me at te edge of my seat as I took a peek at the different snapshots from the past.
-
Art style is pretty good and the voice acting and music are pretty on point (although a bit too loud even on the lower settings).
-
The plot, sound, music, voice acting, and visual style are immersive and engrossing.

learning curve
5 positive · 9 negative · 1 mixed · 1 neutral
-
It feels extremely overwhelming at first -- you must identify 60 people, how they died, and who is responsible for their deaths -- but after figuring out how things work you make slow but steady progress.
-
This game took a bit to figure out, and the art style was a turn off at first, especially for a game about actual visual investigation, but I came to appreciate why the designer decided to go with this style.
-
at first it was a little frustrating not having names for people - being able to identify a whole chain of people killing each other but not mark any of it down because I didn't have the names of anyone was quite annoying!

I have a handful of things I could nitpick (I'd have liked a fast travel system to individual memories, a note system might have helped, and I think the initial presentation of "what you're supposed to do" could have been better) but …

I don't have many complaints, but the book could have been somehow easier or more interactive.

addictiveness

I wish I had started playing this game earlier in the day because once I started I couldn't put it down until I had finished it, and it would be better for me today if I had not been up until 6:45am last night totally absorbed in the Obra Dinn mystery.
-
This game is so addicting its hard to put down. I originally thought i would hate the visuals but now i like them.
-
Just an very solid game that you'll lose track of time playing.

level design
4 positive · 6 negative · 0 mixed · 0 neutral
-
The one gripe I have with the game is that once you’ve seen every fate, you most likely will have to do a lot of back and forth around the ship.
-
Having to physically move to a corpse every time you want to examine a scene can be tedious, especially when trying to cross-check details late in the game.
-
Some memories were also difficult to find, leading to some frustration if you step away for a few days and come back and are at a loss of where to go or what to do.
-
-
realism
5 positive · 1 negative · 1 mixed · 1 neutral
-
First you have the incredible attention to historical detail, which makes the game feel immersive despite the minimalistic presentation.
-
Best insurance assessment simulator I've ever played.
-
The boat is accurate to the era along with the mixed bag of diversity on the ship, it was the heights of the British Empire after all.

-
controls

First, the controls can't be rebound.
-
The controls in this game can be finicky at times; I found that the camera would need to be aligned “just right” to interact with certain bodies.
-

The real issues lies in that some of the finer points of the deductions are really unclear and lead to some guessing (was this person spiked, eaten, or clawed?
-
The game is a true detective game, one of the best I'd say, because hand helding it's at it's minimum, however, after 6 hours, did not know what to do, or what did I had to do in order to advance.
-
This is supposed to be a puzzle game, but there is only one puzzle and no variation.

The game's art style is very unique, the writing and sound design are superb, and the main mechanic is interesting and well-executed.

How this report was made
- Population
- all Steam reviews of the game (every language, purchase type, and verdict), walked newest-first per window; only English-language reviews are analyzed
- Sample
- 592 English reviews, time-proportional draw over 95 windows (newest-first within each), taken from an all-language walk and kept English-only — where English is a minority the sample runs smaller than the draw, and every margin of error is computed at 592
- Aspect yield
- 385 of 592 analyzed reviews carry at least one aspect (65.0%); every share on this page divides by all 592
- Interval regime
- calm: standard margins of error for a share of a sample (Wilson interval), no widening needed
- Fetch paths
- 95 time windows fetched directly (windowed)
- Language mix

- Steam-marked windows
- none flagged by Steam (Valve's off-topic flagging began March 2019)
- Marked share
- 0.0% of sample inside marked windows, under the 2% floor
- Narrative
- passed the grounding gate first try
- Evidence floor
- aspects and emergent themes appear only with 5+ supporting reviews; smaller counts sit at the classifier's false-positive floor
- Instrument readings
- measured once on the study corpus for this model and prompt: frozen calibration, not properties of this run
- · aspect tagging vs. human labels
- 0.766 [0.713–0.811] (F1 against a human-labeled test set; 1.0 is best)
- · quotes filed under the wrong aspect
- 11.6% [6.6–19.6] of quotes, measured by hand on a sample; lower is better
