Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines
analyzed 2026-10-02 · complete count of 1,459 English reviews
Across all 1,459 reviews, the strongest current is gameplay: 168 of the 195 mentions are positive, with players calling it "the game to look up" for real-time tactics and praising "the simplicity of the first one". Difficulty draws the most attention at 17.3%, and it splits — 154 positive against 52 negative — with comments ranging from "It's challenging and fun." to one player noting 13 hours and only 3 levels cleared. Level design, combat, quest design, build variety, and atmosphere all skew heavily positive, and the cast's "unique skills" and personalities recur. Friction concentrates elsewhere. Controls are the clearest sore point: 73 of 92 mentions are negative, citing clunky navigation and key binds that "cannot be customized". Graphics lean negative at 61 of 130, and platform access, bugs, and stability each draw more criticism than praise, including saving problems and crashes. Performance is evenly divided at 47 positive and 47 negative, and updates are mentioned both ways, with some noting a patch that made the game playable on modern systems. Opinion also splits on the learning curve and balance. Players repeatedly raise the save system, language support, and stealth, and the AI, interface, and sound design come up critically.

Graphic is bad, but this game is from 1998 so we don't except good graphic from that period, do we.

Only wish i could upscale it a bit so doesnt look so grainy.

It's grainy and simple, but lots of nostalgia for me.

Doesn't work on modern systems. You'll have to search for fixes and patches by yourself.
-
You can buy it in here, if you wanna to support the game in someway if you like the game the same way as me, but I have to say, this version of the game is not good, downloading a pirate version will give u better experience, sadly.
-
Sadly one of my favorite games as a wee little boyo is no longer playable on modern systems.

it runs too fast and you can;t save in the middle of missions, it's all or nothing, pretty terrible three quarters spent here
-
but buyers be aware there is a saving problem in this game which can be fixed by adding few lines in a comandos.
-
But even with that fix, the game doesn't remember saves / or passwords to continue the missions.

This game does not run properly on Windows 7 and Square Enix's support center referred me to the game's forums on Steam for a fix that does not even seem to make the game work properly.

Crashed after 12 minutes of play. And i couldn't close it so had to restart the computer. I remember watching a friend play commandos.

When I was a kid I was not able to pass mission 15: I have done it now, after so many years, and I really have to say the last missions (especially mission 20) are the most funny ones :)

If you're looking for a game with intense strategic elements and tactical challenge, and if you're not a graphics-obsessed dummy, you'll enjoy this game immensely.

'Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines's extreme difficulty and character variants make for a superb strategic experience.

Probably the most strategic (small-scale tactics) RTS game I've ever played.

level design
31 positive · 10 negative · 3 mixed · 1 neutral
-
These levels are some of the most fun puzzles I've ever encountered.

The level of difficulty of the missions is perfectly structured, from a first mission is essentially a tutorial to the last this goes up gradually without big jumps.

Great levels, lots of suspense, and very satisfying, often frustrating gameplay.

No tutorial. Throws you into the first level and gives no directions about controls.
-
He probably had the patience to watch the tutorials. I altho could soon discover this game wouldn't really appeal to me, in many ways.

The learning curve is steep, but the gameplay loop of luring Nazis away from their base one by one is pretty pretty pretty good.

You'll have to learn your team's strengths and weaknesses in order to beat it's crushingly difficult missions against the Nazi war machine.

There are different characters with their special roles in the squad.

I wouldn’t say the game has any glitches but it is old and sometimes the enemies get stuck on a car or a turning when trying to run to a gunshot etc

-
Every move you make must be planned ahead, sometimes four/five moves ahead, enemies' IA is unforgiving, graphics are outdated and the old and clunky interface will make you rage too often, but when it came out in 1998 this was an instant classic, and it was nice to play it again after so many years!

There's fans out there capable of fixing the game for free, a thing that u guys should have done already.
-
btw, if you are using win 7 or higher, you should find patch because the dev (technically not Eidos, but Square Enix , the now own them) don't really care with very old game like this, you have to manually replace the exe and some dll, and poof the game speed is normal

really intense strategy based on real operation in ww2

Although the graphics were not that advanced considering that this game was developed in the 90s, it does mimic a real-life war scenario.

Very in-depth detail to this game yet not over the top.

balance
4 positive · 10 negative · 0 mixed · 0 neutral

you sometimes have to face too difficult situations (it happened in 2 or 3 missions, at least), and they can be often be easily overcame with "dirty tactics", ie.
-
Characters are not that well balanced, you can do almost anything just using the green beret so everyone else has a specific purpose on the mission and little more use.
-
The balance of the commandos themselves is very distant as you will likely end up favoring the spy when he is in uniform followed by the green beret at every other point.

The soundtrack, composed by Mateo Pascual, enhances the tension perfectly—combining military marches, subdued strings, and occasional bursts of intensity that mirror the ebb and flow of stealth and chaos.

It is close to top down view the graphics are a bit old but work great and to be honest I love games that look like this.
-
For a 1990s game, the graphics have aged well, and the style/design is really cool and nicely detailed.
-
Aged pretty well for a 25 year old game, due to fun engaging mechanics and a great artstyle.

Overall, a great game, with a good storyline and varied gameplay.

One of those who made story, this game has become a reference in it's genre, by mixing smart challenges with a entertaining game play, which is constantly adding new elements.

Amazing storyline, extremely balanced characters, beautiful maps, excellent GUI, good controls and challenging missions make it a timeless classic.

The game performs pretty poorly, but i could fix it with some mods

There's a fix somewhere on the internet (Use at own risk) to reduce the speed of the game and gives you the ability to save.
-
It needs a little tweeking to be able to run on todays gamer rigs but thanks to a few patched files from a nice supporting players (thanks whoever made those files) it works like a charm and brings back memories.
-
Nothing that a quick google search for help won't fix though.

lore
9 positive · 0 negative · 0 mixed · 0 neutral

The game ties in with history and other known stories and makes for a fun campaign.
-
At the beginning of each of the twenty missions, the historic circumstances are explained and original pictures are shown.
-
I'll simply say, when it comes to the game itself, that both the atmosphere and little history paragraphs (most missions being roughly sketched around real operations) stand out to this day.

player choice
8 positive · 1 negative · 0 mixed · 0 neutral
-
Other than your team roster and the scenario they find themselves in, the course of action is totally up to you.
-
This game will force you to make interesting decisions and try new things, or sometimes you have luck on your side and an NPC just randomly doesn't look your way for a second, affording you a narrow escape.
-
Your decisions have consequences, so use the Quick Save feature often.

pacing
3 positive · 4 negative · 0 mixed · 0 neutral

To slow but ok.
-
The lack of an ability to queue up actions makes the flow of action very stilted; plan, act, stop to plan the next bit.

This game doesn't punish incompetence; it punishes impatience because it takes an inordinate amount of time to complete anything.

The only minor negative thing that comes to mind is that you can't enter the last mission unless you got good enough ranks from the other missions.
-
*The leveling mechanic 'Merit' never had a function originally nor now.
-
Each time you complete a level you get to look at the stats of the map and the game will grade you your time and damage to the enemy etc this is then put towards merits and this is how you get promoted.

How this report was made
- Population
- all Steam reviews of the game (every language, purchase type, and verdict), walked newest-first per window; only English-language reviews are analyzed
- Sample
- complete count: every usable English review (1,459), fetched whole-life
- Aspect yield
- 801 of 1,459 analyzed reviews carry at least one aspect (54.9%); every share on this page divides by all 1,459
- Interval regime
- exact counts, no margins of error to calibrate
- Fetch paths
- 1 time window fetched directly (windowed)
- Language mix
- 4,056 fetched: english 1,464 · spanish 668 · brazilian 388 · 24 more
- Steam-marked windows
- none flagged by Steam (Valve's off-topic flagging began March 2019)
- Marked share
- 0.0% of sample inside marked windows, under the 2% floor
- Narrative
- passed the grounding gate first try
- Evidence floor
- aspects and emergent themes appear only with 5+ supporting reviews; smaller counts sit at the classifier's false-positive floor
- Instrument readings
- measured once on the study corpus for this model and prompt: frozen calibration, not properties of this run
- · aspect tagging vs. human labels
- 0.801 [0.752–0.844] (F1 against a human-labeled test set; 1.0 is best)
- · quotes filed under the wrong aspect
- 11.6% [6.6–19.6] of quotes, measured by hand on a sample; lower is better — measured on the prior model (2026-08-05); re-measurement pending
- · independent model vs. production labels
- 0.791 [0.772–0.810] (F1 of the production labeler against an independent judge model) — measured on the prior model (2026-07-25); re-measurement pending
