Marvel's Avengers - The Definitive Edition
analyzed 2026-08-17 · sample of 507 English reviews across the whole review history
Players most consistently praise the story, with 83 of 113 story mentions positive, often calling out the campaign and its writing. Combat also leans positive, as do graphics and character work, with players noting "I absolutely loved the combat" and that "Each character plays differently and the character variety" stands out. The Definitive Edition's late updates are acknowledged too, with one player saying the game was "made so much better as of late" and that "after the final patch, you get all skins and emotes for free." The heaviest criticism lands on bugs and stability, with 68 of 72 bug mentions and 49 of 56 stability mentions negative. Players describe crashes on unsaveable missions, loading screens that never end, and enemies spawning underground. Quest design, level design, and matchmaking are nearly universally panned, and monetization draws strong dislike even in this edition. Price-value and content amount also skew negative, with one player calling it "underwhelming and boring" even at a low price and another noting "there is literally nothing to grind for." Opinion splits most clearly on gameplay, which is nearly evenly divided between positive and negative mentions, and on characters, where praise for the heroes coexists with complaints about customization gaps. Multiplayer and progression also lean negative, with cross-play and matchmaking frustrations recurring. Players frequently bring up grind as a theme, though some find the game addictive and the combat loop engaging enough to keep playing.

Although this game seems to get a lot of hate, I seriously enjoyed the campaign and the how unique the gameplay was for each character (except Hulk, massive L on Enix's part for that one).
-
Game is fun, but not fun enough for $60.
-
Gameplay is superb. Graphics are solid.

I love the story line of this game, and seems like you cant go wrong with marvel, love the option of being able too coop do missions with friends as well as the option too just fly solo.

-
Very repetitive, the story of this game is actually great, too bad this cant be told about the gameplay.

-
It's like the movie, but glitchy.
-
Many glitches, low budget looking, character design is very poor and speech to action syncing is terrible.
-

wasted 60 dollars on a game that barely functions, i can't play cross platforms with friends, and i can't even get spider-man, i like marvel but i think i went to far when i made the choice to buy this, and i can't refund and get my money back.
-
Wish I played 2.6 hours less so I could refund my £60
-
even for $5 it's underwhelming and boring.

I like Banner, I like Stark, I like the combat.... more or less. First part of the game is cool, but then, the design destroys the game.

In one hand, I absolutely loved the combat!

In this game, that has like a million of in-game purchase items, where tutorial on heroes starts 3 hours in the campaign, there's a nasty walkthough issue which will block your campaign walkthough forever and make save unusable.
-
Ok, assuming xpadder could solve that, the game apparently is so full of glitches, that the very first cutscene sound began while the neverending loading screen was still there.

characters

-
-
I have to give credit where credit is due but the attention to detail in this game is phenomenal. From interactions between hero's in the campaign, to more subtle details like playing as banner instead of the hulk when not in battle or the hammer …
-
I like the play style and the Characters have fun moves you can earn/purchase as you play more with customizable gear with Power Levels.

So, there is literally nothing to grind for, even when the game forces me to.

Original story following a character the fans didn't care about, bugs at launch, matchmaking issues, repetitive content!

A lack of bosses when the game released majorly hurt and impacted the games ability to succeed.

great graphics you need good drivers to play right but very fun
-
Pity, the graphics are nice, as the combat, but the design is awful and destroys the game.

Graphics are solid. Just know its a very system intensive game, so beware of that before you go blaming the game when it's your PC that just can't handle it.

The game didnt have many bugs or crashes during my time of playing but multiplayer might still need to be refined.

progression
12 positive · 20 negative · 3 mixed · 2 neutral
-
The raid update reworks the way gear levels and its somehow worse, removing all point to resources in the game.
-
The loot system is like most other rpgs where you defeat a bunch of enemies in an area and solve a 'puzzle' to find and loot the chest inside buildings.
-
— Characters unlocked only by playing all the missions, and this takes just a lot of time, especially if they all are same.

5/10 for the glitches however I will say, i played for 4-5 hours today and did not crash one time and crashing is a big buzzkill for me and for this game to run so smooth and NOT crash is amazing, kudos to the dev team for patching this game up the way they have!
-
It's been made so much better as of late.
-
after the final patch, you get all skins and emotes for free.

developer conduct
9 positive · 21 negative · 0 mixed · 0 neutral

They don't care about Marvel IP, they don't care about making a good game, and they certainly don't care about the players.
-
Just another poorly-handled situation for the game after countless problems they created.
-
The Avengers is a mess of different expectations, lackluster support from Square, poor monetization decisions, and a corporate acquisition that eventually did it in.

quest design

same goes for mission type variety...

One big problem is, it seems they tried soooo hard not to be linear that you have no idea what to do, in what order.

The mission types are somewhat varied but mostly go in to this map and do these alerts, rinse and repeat.

level design

First part of the game is cool, but then, the design destroys the game. Too many shops. Too many things, is oriented to grind, is oriented to a business model that I hate.
-
Whoever designed the final level for war of wakanda needs to be hung drawn and quartered as the absolute ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ donut of a useless wankjob that they are 👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎
-
The same 3 maps tend to get used for all missions which can get stale quickly.

The evade controls on the PC are very difficult to manage with the preset keybindings.

21st century and they are still developing NO CONTROLLER SUPPORT games - that alone deserves NOT RECOMMENDED.

Also, this game has one of the most un-intuitive dodge mechanics I've ever seen in a game.

due to a low active playerbase on Steam it takes ages to find a match for the new Raid which requires a full 4-player Squad.

I check the shop, and I see hundreds of Iron Man armor, but no mark IV, no centurion... (No comments) No Captain America and no Hawkeye classic outfits, not even US Agent classic (that thing in game does not know what the hell is).
-
It would have been nice if they could have given us some basic outfits that change based on the item you're equipping (they have different brands and ♥♥♥♥).

agreeing to make Spider-Man exclusive to one platform.
-
As a huge Spider-Man fan I'm super disappointed that we don't get him and makes the Xbox/PC versions the lesser of the 3 platforms.
-
I dont understand why this game doesn't get included in the Halloween sale, console exclusive playable characters are horrifying to me.

I don't like walking around just to find merchants, companion AI that cannot seem to locate healing orbs, can't instruct your companions, and some other minor glitches.

AI teammates seem intent on standing around and dying as apposed to contributing to the fight, and don't prioritize objectives at all.

balance
0 positive · 6 negative · 0 mixed · 0 neutral

Its balanced in a way that if you haven't put in the time for the grind you gotta go grind more real fun stuff when you're supposed to be a superhero.
-
- Game design is questionable right now, legendary and epic tier gear and interchangeable (they both have the same stats and perks etc) and exotics don't feel particularly exotic, they have the same perks as legendary and epic, but have slightly better stats and less RNG.

Trash combat system that mobs you with enemies that can kill you in 3 hits no matter if you have a higher gear score or what difficulty level you're playing on.

Fun at times but just don't find myself wanting to come back to it.

Got for free from Intel, paid for it on console, the game is boring and has no reason to come back, especially with the over the top marketing towards spending money on the costumes rather than playing the game.

If I play as Iron man, my brother can't see me shot, if he plays as hulk I can't see him throw, and this is random, we finished one mission that actually worked and that mission had no sound whatsoever.

How this report was made
- Population
- all Steam reviews of the game (every language, purchase type, and verdict), walked newest-first per window; only English-language reviews are analyzed
- Sample
- 507 English reviews, time-proportional draw over 72 windows (newest-first within each), taken from an all-language walk and kept English-only — where English is a minority the sample runs smaller than the draw, and every margin of error is computed at 507
- Aspect yield
- 321 of 507 analyzed reviews carry at least one aspect (63.3%); every share on this page divides by all 507
- Interval regime
- calm: standard margins of error for a share of a sample (Wilson interval), no widening needed
- Fetch paths
- 72 time windows fetched directly (windowed)
- Language mix
